The Middle Yukon Branch is located in Galena, Alaska, a bush community of about 600 people, located on the Yukon River. The branch is operated by staff of the Koyukuk and Nowitna National Wildlife Refuge Complex. Over 6 million acres of boreal forest, wetlands, uplands and riparian areas are incuded in the refuge complex. The lower Koyukuk River winds its way through the Koyukuk NWR, and the river and surrounding wetlands provide outstanding waterfowl habitat, as well as homes to moose, bears, wolves, caribou, salmon, pike and other wildlife. Within the refuge is the 400,000 acre Koyukuk Wilderness Area, which includes the Nogabahara Sand Dunes, an unusual and stunning geologic phenomenon. Locally called Kaiyuh Flats, the Northern Unit of the Innoko NWR is a broad expanse of wetlands which is a phenominal breeding ground for waterfowl. The Nowitna River, one of America’s recognized Wild Rivers, is the lifeblood of the Nowitna NWR.
