Teacher Trainings: Explore Alaska's Wild Classrooms | Alaska Geographic

Teacher Trainings
Be Inspired by Alaska's Wild Classrooms

teachersjpgShare methods, tools, and curriculum for classroom learning with other teachers from Alaska and nationwide. Earn 1-3 professional development credits from the University of Alaska as you explore Alaska by foot, ferry, float plane, or kayak.

Most Teacher Trainings are led by a team of two: Alaska’s best naturalists, geologists, or wildlife biologists, plus curriculum experts or master teachers. We take care of the details like lodging and transportation so you can focus on bringing Alaska’s forests, mountains, and tundra back to your classroom.

Every ecosystem and classroom is unique, so each Teacher Training is custom-designed. Some are based out of a field camp with rustic tent cabins, while others use charter boats, tents, or hotels for accommodations. Meals, lodging, equipment, and transportation are provided, unless otherwise stated. Most meals are served family-style, and are simple, hearty, and healthy.

Scholarships are available for teachers attending accredited Teacher Trainings and Field Seminars in Denali National Park and Preserve.

Hiking Distances and Physical Fitness

Participants must be capable walkers, in good health, and equipped for sudden changes in weather. Hiking distance and physical fitness levels are described in greater detail for each course, but generally fall into two levels of difficulty:
